Measures of variance
Although we have not yet covered measures of variance in class, the concept naturally comes up in statistics class discussions. I mention it here because I will be working on some statistical analysis via SPSS at the MIND Research Network, and will be working with repeated measures designs to determine variance between variables on the same subjects. It will be a rather intriguing study, I think: we will be examining the relationship between E.I. (Emotional Intelligence, a form of intelligence which has not been mentioned in class or in Gould's book, perhaps because it is a relatively newer scientific concept) and certain paraphilias (psycho-sexual disorders like sadism, pedophilia, fetishism etc.). It will be fascinating to see how something how we cover objectively in class can be applied to the study of human beings. Still, if there is anything we have garnered from Gould, it is that the mismeasure of man is a very common thing...

I find it interesting that such acts, "Kink" as it is colloquially know, are deemed as disorders. This definition is a construct of societal norms as I would tend to disagree that such sexual desires as sadism and fetishism are viewed as actual illegal acts as pedophilia. Once again it all comes down to operational definitions, where your research would deem certain things as psycho-sexual disorder and I would classify them as desires unaccepted by the social norm.
