Peter Donnelly, a mathematician
from Oxford University discusses in this video many of the mistakes humans make interpreting
statistics, especially on how the impact the outcome in criminal trials.
As we have discussed in class, the way a lot
of statistics are presented can be misleading. The interpretation is a challenge
on itself, yet, the framing someone else gives them makes us rely on the
interpretation of another interpretation.
Professor Donnelly
relies a lot on the idea that when we see a number, we cannot make inferences
without knowing how the data was collected. The responsibility of researchers
to carry a good procedure is quintessential, and it can be concluded tha t a clear explanation of their analysis must be given in order to avoid misinterpretation from others.
