Binomial Distributions

Today in class, we were introduced to binomial distribution. I thought that it was very interesting that Professor Oyen mentioned that the "n" term in the binomial distribution equation must be known, and cannot be solved for (or at least the way to solve for it is disputed). How could something so fundamental as determining the number of trials be so difficult? Is the equation we use unnecessarily complex? Is there a simple reduction that hasn't been discovered yet? Is this "just the way it is"? I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this matter.

Thanks,
-Lee

  1. I'm a bit at a loss for this one. Although we can estimate sample size we cannot estimate n with any great accuracy. I've been doing research on this today and have not as of yet found any telling answers...
