A Pareto Distribution is geared towards the extremes of parameters unlike the normal distribution which functions best for the average.
The Pareto Distribution was developed by Vilfredo Pareto to describe distribution of wealth. It gained fame in the early 20th century. The 80-20 rule (20% of the population controls 80% of the wealth) is derived from a Pareto projection.
In the attached graph, the blue represents a Pareto Distribution and the red a Normal Distribution.

That's an interesting distribution due to the influence it has had in economics. Because of this distribution there is something called "Pareto Efficiency" in which is an equilibrium in which an individual cannot be better off without making everyone else worse off.
