Kai

I know that this is a bit of stretch, but the man definitely uses some statistics in his interview... and this is just too good to not pass along: http://www.news10.net/video/default.aspx?bctid=2146743063001

At the beginning of the interview, Kai the heroic hitchhiker tells us something along the lines of: "everyone deserves respect, everyone is a person."  Do I hear a 100% in there?  A mean+all standard deviations?  I think so.  Of course, Kai's affirmation quantifies an all and that is perhaps the biggest unfounded statistical assumption that can be made.  It is a null hypothesis - that there exists no variation in the data or the predictions - and here we cannot significantly discard it.

Kai's statement is not based on any reliable data, but rather his own biased experiences and probably and overly generous bud-stoked outlook.  Though it may make him statistically inaccurate, the man doesn't look like he's too bothered by it.  Here's to Kai, the heroic hitchhiker.

  1. Great video Mika. Really glad that I was able to view that considering I just finished defending the rights of humans against apartheid in another class! Good stuff.

  2. Its an interesting video Mika and a good comment. Sometimes we forget the assumptions and statistical generalizations we make every day. I think you could make higher statistical assumptions than this one, specially when referring not to the comment but to the implications this might have. The idea of not being able to discard something like this comment really bothers me, as people differ from a lot of people on what respect really means. Great video. See you in class
